This Week’s Powerhouse Plant: Turmeric

This Week’s Powerhouse Plant: Turmeric
Turmeric, the bold yellow spice you may have sitting in your cupboard carries a vast range of health benefits. This plant, part of the ginger family, can be purchased in its whole, raw form or as a dried, powdered version. Native to Southeast Asia, turmeric can be used in a multitude of recipes from curries and daal, to lattes and fresh juices. There is always a place for this ingredient in the kitchen!

Containing the powerhouse curcumin, a polyphenol that gives turmeric its yellow color is said to provide anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and antioxidant properties, to just name a few. Assisting in the ever so hot topic right now, “gut health,” curcumin is known to help reduce intestinal inflammation. Not only is turmeric used in a culinary sense, but it can also be taken in a supplement form suggesting it can assist with various health conditions. It is said that this plant can aid in joint pain and arthritis, allergies, digestive issues, and respiratory infections. Now, let’s get cooking!

What are some recipes Turmeric is found in?

  • Daal - A great option for meal planning! Most recipes yield a lot of this warming, lentil-based dish that’s great served over rice or with naan. This bright yellow porridge-like fare is derived from the Sanskrit word, meaning “to split.” This dish is simple and doesn’t require soaking beforehand. The best part - freshly crack whole dried red chili, freshly ground black pepper, mustard, and cumin seeds over medium heat in a small pan with olive or coconut oil to drizzle on top of your daal.

  • Salad Dressings - Toss some ground turmeric in a homemade dressing by whisking it with tahini, tamari, water, and some fresh lemon juice for a quick, healthy, and colorful salad.

  • Tofu Scrambles - calling all vegans! To give crumbled tofu that “scrambled egg” color, turmeric plays an important role in not only the vibrant color and taste of this breakfast favorite but gives a boost in its nutrients too! Just be careful not to add too much, so the flavor or turmeric overwhelms the scramble. We make our organic tofu scrambles by sauteing freshly cut scallions, sea salt, black pepper and a pinch of turmeric over low heat in olive oil. Then, we add hand-crumbled tofu until it's seasoned throughout. Be careful not to overcook, otherwise the tofu will become dry.

  • Savory Breakfast Oats - Not in the mood for sweets in the morning? Try a savory oat dish, like this recipe by Ann Essylstyn who eats the same, nourishing breakfast every morning.

P.S. & Co. offers this powerhouse plant in the following beverages and savory items:

This warm and nourishing latte is blended with carefully chosen components such as: creamy coconut milk, turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and coconut sugar (which has a lower glycemic index than white sugar).
