The Brazil nut is a hot ingredient here at P.S. & Co.™ In addition to being added to many of our menu items via our homemade Brazil Nut Milk, this tree nut packs a punch when it comes to health benefits. Brazil nuts are grown in a coconut-like, baseball-sized fruit that can hold about 10-21 nuts arranged similarly to an orange segments.
Native to South America, these magnificent trees can grow over 160 feet. Adding these nuts in their whole, raw, shelled form or through nut milk to your diet can add various nutritional boots.
Containing high levels of phytonutrients, it’s said that these powerful nuts can assist in lowering cholesterol and triggering antioxidant and anti-proliferative (inhibiting cell growth) activity within the body. Studies have shown that eating an average of 4 brazil nuts may lower LDL cholesterol levels (the bad cholesterol) and heighten one’s HDL levels for up to 30 days! Brazil nuts contain fiber, selenium, protein, magnesium, and phosphorus, just to name a few. In addition, they also contain Vitamin E, unsaturated fatty acids, Vitamin B6, calcium, zinc, iron, and potassium.
What’s in a Brazil nut?
Selenium (Se) - is a trace mineral and an essential nutrient for one’s health. Brazil nuts have some of the highest concentrations of selenium. Various nuts and vegetables (broccoli, spinach, peas) are great ways to get your dose.
Fiber - absolutely essential in our everyday health. 97% of Americans are fiber deficient. Stay regular, keep a happy gut, and try to work fiber in daily through more whole plants!
Protein - nuts, especially brazil nuts are fantastic forms of plant proteins. We have these wonderful resources right at our fingertips. You can also reap the benefits through brazil nut milk too! Something we are very fond of here at P.S. & Co.
Magnesium (Mg) - prevalent in nuts, seeds, grains, and legumes, magnesium can be an easy addition to your diet. However, even some of the most so-called “healthy” Americans can lack this nutrient. Due to consuming processed foods and using magnesium deficient soil in agricultural practices, it can be easy to miss this nutrient. Playing a role in various physiological functions, magnesium is known to offer benefits such as assisting in one’s sleep health, regularity, energy, mood, and even headaches.
Calcium (Ca) - calcium is a crucial, essential vitamin to keep healthy bones and teeth. Calcium can also work synergistically between muscle movement and cardiovascular function. Brazil nuts are a wonderful plant option to use as milk or to eat in their raw, shelled form.
