What the Heck is Nutritional Yeast?

Nutritional yeast, or as vegans call it, nooch, is a light, flaky, yellow seasoning that brings a cheesy flavor to an endless amount of recipes. According to various sources, nutritional yeast was coined “Nooch” by Isa Chandra Moskowitz of Post Punk Kitchen. Thankfully, we have a better nickname for the seasoning than the unfortunate nutritious nomenclature it possesses. Nooch consists of the below ingredients:

  • Dried Yeast, Niacin

  • Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6)

  • Thiamin Hydrochloride (Vitamin B1)

  • Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Folic Acid (Vitamin B9)

  • Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12)

*pulled from the popular brand, Bragg, which is one of the most well-known nutritional yeast suppliers.

B-12

If you are a vegan, you are most likely aware of B-12 deficiencies. This is the main supplement that is recommended for people who don’t consume animal products. It’s not actually the animals that contain this vitamin, B-12 comes from microbes within the earth that are consumed by animals while they are eating a plant-based diet. Nutritional yeast is a great, and delicious way to add this vitamin to your diet. It is possible to get this vitamin through B-12 fortified foods, but it’s difficult to track them every single day to meet your quota and that’s why most people opt for the supplement. You could also get your daily dose through eating bugs, dirt, and feces as great apes do, but I wouldn’t suggest that!

*Taking one 2,000 mcg supplement is ideal for adults under the age of 65. Find more information on supplemental doses here, backed by Dr. Gregor of nutritionfacts.org.

B Vitamins

There’s a wide array of B vitamins in nutritional yeast. B vitamins help to support metabolism and are known to be the “beauty” vitamins. Aiding in skin health, nail and hair growth, these vitamins have almost immediate and visible benefits when consumed regularly. Nail growth and hardness are some of the first things that tend to be noticed when consuming B vitamins, especially B-12 and B-9.

Fiber

If you read these ingredient blog posts, you know we are serious about fiber. Fiber is essential for an individual’s health. Nutritional yeast contains naturally occurring beta-glucan fiber. Beta-glucan fiber is a soluble dietary fiber that can be found in the cell walls of plants such as wheat, oats, algae, yeasts, fungi, and bacteria. This type of fiber can help to boost immunity and stabilize blood sugar levels. Regularly incorporating fiber into a diet dilutes the intestinal waste stream to help accelerate the removal of excess cholesterol from the body. It is said that “normal” levels of fiber consumption can relieve the body of excess estrogen. This may explain why those who follow a plant-based diet can have a reduced breast cancer risk. Shockingly, 97% of Americans are fiber deficient. Aside from helping to reduce and prevent serious diseases and health risks, fiber relieves constipation, bloat, and sluggish mind/body responses.
