Health Benefits of Our Organic Muffin Mix
Almond Flour / Almond Butter
Almonds contain many vitamins and minerals, amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and fatty acids. Studies have shown the importance of consuming these ingredients via almonds to have beneficial effects on human health. Almonds are made up of macro and micronutrients with diverse bioactive compounds. These powerhouse plants contain about 50% lipids, 25% proteins, and 20% carbohydrates. Researchers have confirmed the prebiotic capability of almonds. They have been known to regulate lipid and glucose levels providing assistance to regulate body weight and ward off cardiovascular diseases.
Ground Flax
-
Flaxseeds include three main bioactive compounds; lignans, fiber, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Lignans, which work as both a phytoestrogen (a naturally-occurring compound found in plants) and an antioxidant, have been reported to contain powerful disease-fighting properties. Lignans have been known to show a reduction of growth in hormone-sensitive cancer tumors such as the prostate, breast, and endometrium.
-
Fiber, or the “roughage”, is the plant-based carbohydrate that is usually found in the skins, seeds, and stems of plants. Flax fiber, a biodegradable, natural composite contains both soluble and insoluble dietary fibers. This insoluble fiber helps to prevent constipation and soluble fiber helps in lowering cholesterol while maintaining one’s blood glucose levels.
-
Flaxseed is a rich, plant-based source of ALA, a plant-derived omega-3 fatty acid. Just adding 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed a day to your diet will supply your body with its daily dose of immune-enhancing omega-3s. Essential in proper brain and nerve functioning, this nutrient is known to reduce neurological disorders. It can assist in the prevention and treatment of heart disease as well as reduce osteoporosis, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, cancer, and arthritis.
Blueberries (if you choose them!)
The top three berries when it comes to packing in the antioxidants and easy availability would be blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Try to source local, organic berries when possible. Known to prevent and delay certain types of cell damage in your body, antioxidants can not only be incredibly healthy for you but delicious as well! Antioxidants are primarily found in natural forms of fruits and vegetables. Adding a heavy dose of fruits and vegetables to any diet is known to have a lower risk of several diseases.
Chocolate Chips (if you choose them!)
Active compounds, flavanols, and methylxanthines are very prominent in cacao/chocolate. Flavonols contain B2, B3, C1 procyanidins, catechin, and derivatives. In recent history, the antioxidant properties of said compounds have caught the public’s interest. Pulled directly from plants, antioxidants are known to prevent and delay certain types of cell damage in the body. Providing anti-inflammatory benefits as well, studies have also shown that cacao has reduced obesity-related inflammation.
Try to avoid the following in your chocolate:
-
High fructose corn syrup
-
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
-
Artificial dyes (red and yellow dyes, caramel color)
-
Partially hydrogenated oils
-
Artificial flavors (sometimes simply listed as “artificial flavors”) or “natural flavors” can sometimes fall under the same category as artificial flavors
-
Various forms of dairy (milk powders, casein, whey)
